Report on the fire occurred at the Asia Silicones Monomer Plant

On October 19, 2017 at about 8:20 a.m. local time, a fire occurred at a plant of Asia Silicones Monomer Ltd. ("ASM"), a subsidiary of Shin-Etsu Chemical Co., Ltd. that is located in Rayong, Thailand. The fire was extinguished about 15 minutes later at 8.35 a.m. on the same day.

To all those concerned people, we apologize for any trouble and anxieties that this accident has caused.

The cause of the fire
The fire occurred while work was being carried out during the process of the removal of a by-product. For some reason, a container caught fire. The cause of the fire is now under investigation.

The damage situation and impact on operations
No persons were injured due to this fire and there was no risk to the community. With regard to the manufacturing facilities, we are now in the process of conducting a thorough inspection, however, no large amount of damage happened to the facilities.
Presently, the operation is stopped with regard to the process where the fire occurred. However, with permission obtained from the supervisory authorities, other processes are continuing operation.
In addition, we are informing local residents of the situation regarding what happened.

The measures we need to take
As quickly as possible, we will endeavor to determine the cause of the fire and what measures need to be taken to prevent any such recurrence. We will report our findings to the supervisory authorities and move ahead with carrying out the work needed to resume the process operation that has currently been stopped.
