Shin-Etsu Silicone Selection Guide

Silicone Oligomer Type A

Type A silicone oligomers contain alkoxysilyl groups, but no reactive functional groups, and are composed of methyl groups alone or methyl and phenyl groups.

Type A products are classified into two categories: methyl and methyl/phenyl. Methyl products are mainly used alone to form cured films because of their high hardness, water repellency and excellent curability, while methyl/phenyl products are used as resin hybridizers because of
their excellent compatibility.

Silicone Oligomer based Coatings

Due to its excellent water repellent/oil repellent properties, it is resistant to oil stains and can be used as a raw material for coatings that easily remove oil stains with a light wipe. Even when wiped up with a cloth before curing to make a thinner film, it still exhibits water repellency and oil repellency. In addition, although it is a fluorinated product, it can be diluted with common organic solvents.

Product when used as a Resin Hybridizer

The silanol groups generated by the hydrolysis of alkoxysilyl or alkoxysilyl groups can be used to modify other organic resins to improve their heat resistance and weather resistance. The reaction mechanism involves “de-alcohol condensation” of the alcoholic hydroxyl groups and alkoxysilyl groups in each organic resin, and “dehydration condensation” of the silanol groups. Water-based organic resins include the methyl group. For solvent-based organic resins, phenyl oligomers are generally used.

Features of each Organic Resin Modified with Silicone

  • Acrylic Resins
In addition to the inherent solvent resistance, chemical resistance, and durability of acrylic resins, these resins can also provide weatherability and heat resistance, making them widely used as coating resins for building materials.
  • Epoxy Resins
In addition to the inherent anticorrosive properties of epoxy resins, they can also provide weather and heat resistance, and are therefore often used in coatings to protect against aggressive substances.
  • Polyester Resin
In addition to the inherent bending resistance of polyester resin, it can also provide weather and heat resistance, making it suitable for use in paints for construction materials, general industry, and home appliances used at high temperatures.
  • Alkyd resin
Because alkyd resin can be given weather resistance, it is used as a room temperature curing paint resin for tanks, ships, bridges, etc. where weather resistance is required.

Main Products

KR-510
Alkoxy Oligomers Containing Methyl/Phenyl Groups

KR-510 is a methyl/phenyl silicone oligomer containing methoxy groups. Because it contains phenyl groups, it has excellent compatibility with organic resins. By mixing with or demethanol reacting with organic resins that have reactive groups with methoxysilyl groups, it can impart heat resistance, weather resistance, and chemical resistance to resins, and can also be used as a reactive diluent.

Application Examples

By incorporating the siloxane backbone of silicone oligomers into polyester resins, weather resistance can be improved.

KR-500
Methyl group-containing alkoxy oligomers

KR-500 is a methyl silicone oligomer with methoxy groups. By mixing it with organic resins having reactive groups with methoxysilyl groups or by demethanol reaction, it can add heat resistance, weather resistance, and chemical resistance to resins. It can also be applied to water-based resins.

Application Examples

Modified by dehydration and de-alcohol condensation, they can impart weather resistance in addition to adhesion to materials.
