Shin-Etsu Silicone Selection Guide

Silicone Resins and Oligomers

Silicone resins and oligomers are resins composed of siloxane bonds (Si-O-Si) with high binding energy, and their films have various properties such as heat resistance, weather resistance, electrical insulation, and water repellency.

Structures

Silicone resins and oligomers are resins composed of three-dimensional siloxane bonds (Si-O-Si) with high binding energy, which form a hardened film when exposed to heat or moisture.

Features of Siloxane Bond

Silicone resins and oligomers with siloxane bonds as their main backbone have high binding energy, and therefore have excellent properties such as heat resistance, weather resistance, and electrical insulation.

Main Backbone : Siloxane bond

Siloxane bond

All silicone products are composed of the following four basic units, but silicone resins and oligomers are mainly composed of Tri-functional (T units) and have three-dimensional siloxane bonds. Products with Di-functional units (D units) as part of the backbone form films with excellent flexibility and water repellency.

Cure Mechanism

Most products are condensation cure type. Silicone resins have silanol groups (Si-OH) as reactive functional groups, and cure by condensation reaction upon heating. In silicone oligomers, the reactive functional group is an alkoxy group (Si-OR), which is hydrolyzed by moisture, causing a condensation reaction that cures the product.

In addition, we also have some addition cure type products in our lineup. The benefit of the addition cure type is that it has less shrinkage during curing, so it is used for molded products that require dimensional stability and thick film coating applications.

Addition Cure Type

Advantage: Low cure shrinkage.

How to Use

Silicone resin oligomers can be used in two ways: as a “Main component” that forms a cured film on its own, and as a “Resin modifiers” that modifies other organic resins.

Features and Application Examples

Silicone resins and oligomers have excellent heat resistance and weather resistance, and are used in the following applications.
In addition, we have recently been focusing on the development of product groups with unique characteristics such as antistatic properties, oil repellency, alkali resistance, and flex resistance.
