Shin-Etsu Silicone Selection Guide

Silicone Oligomer Type AR

Type AR silicone oligomers are oligomeric coupling agents that can function as adhesion aids between organic resins and inorganic substrates because they contain reactive functional groups in addition to alkoxysilyl groups.

Type ARType AR products are classified according to the type of various reactive functional groups such as epoxy and acrylic groups. These products are mainly used as coupling agents, taking advantage of the reactivity of alkoxysilyl groups to inorganic materials and the reactivity of various reactive functional groups to resins. Since it is less volatile than silane coupling agents, it is excellent for use in high temperature environments. It is also used as a flame retardant additive in some polycarbonate products.

  How to Use Performance Features
Type A Methyl Group Coating agents, resin hybridizing agent High hardness, water repellency, curability
Methyl group, Phenyl group High gloss, compatibility, crack and peeling resistance
Type AR Epoxy group Coupling agent between organic resin and inorganic material Adhesion improvement
Mercapto group Adhesion improvement
Acrylic group Adhesion improvement
Methacrylic group Adhesion improvement
Vinyl group Flame retardancy improvement
Type R Alicyclic epoxy group Main component and hybridizing agent for epoxy and acrylic compositions Low cure shrinkage, heat resistance
Acrylic group Flexibility and crack resistance

Application

Coupling Agents
The major difference from silane coupling agents is volatility. The figure on the right shows a comparison between acrylic oligomers and silane coupling agents. The active ingredients remain even at high temperatures, contributing to better adhesion.
